Submissions
The Anthropocene from the Hill is open to submissions until March 8th. Final decisions will be sent out by April 1st. We are open to prose and poetry from all University of Arkansas undergraduate, graduate, and alumni. You can submit both a poetry packet and a prose packet. See below for genre-specific submission requirements. We do not require a cover letter, but we will ask for author biographies of 200 words or less for accepted pieces; if you would like to send a bio ahead of time, you can send it with your submissions.
Pieces should interpret the theme of the issue in some way. In the case of our inaugural issue, you can stretch “Everyday Magic” in almost any which way, so have fun! Alongside interacting with the theme, we encourage writers to think of the title of our anthology: The Anthropocene from the Hill. Does your work say something about this moment of humanity, as seen from the Ozarks, specifically UARK? If yes, please submit!
We are open to unsolicited and simultaneous submissions, as well as reprints. Email your submissions to afth@uark.edu. If you send us a simultaneous submission, you must inform us immediately if your piece gets accepted elsewhere. If you send us a reprint, you must tell us what publication the piece was published in and when so we can verify rights.
We do not offer payment for pieces, but all contributors will receive a physical copy of the anthology.
Visual art for the cover is only by solicitation.
Poetry
We are open to all poetic forms and genres, as well as poems that do not follow a genre or a form. We ask only for polished poems that have something to say, especially if they’re on-theme.
You may submit up to 5 pages of poetry split up across up to 5 poems. Poems need not be separated by page breaks, but if two poems occupy the same page, then we ask you delineate them clearly by way of their titles or formatting.
Prose
We are open to fiction and creative nonfiction. We are not open to drama or nonfiction (including academic essays). We have no compunctions about genre or style; if it’s good, it’s good.
You may submit up to 5,000 words of fiction, split up across up to 3 pieces. For example, if you want to submit two 1,000-word flash pieces and a 3,000-word short story, go for it! You can submit them as a single packet or as separate documents.
